Using Videos for Distance Speech

Hey there distance learning peeps! So, you’re not allowed to do teletherapy (like me), or you’re looking for some other way to share content with your speech students but you aren’t really sure how to do it or what to say? You’re in luck! This post is all about using videos for distance speech! And in the name of education, I am going to share a video that I sent to my students if you promise not to make fun of me. Deal? Ok. Lets get started.

What platform should I use?

Personally, I create a Zoom meeting with only myself and hit “record”. I find it easiest to share my screen on that platform, and you can pause and resume recording and it stitches it all together for you. When you end the meeting it downloads it all to a handy file that you can send to families or upload to whatever platform you choose (YouTube, Google Classroom, Seesaw, Dojo, etc.)

What resources should I use?

Anything you want! I find it easier to use screen share from my iPad because I think the kiddos can see it clearer but you can use any printed material, book, toy, pet, kitchen item, etc. that you would use in regular therapy!

I’ll list some of my favorite resources to screenshare though just in case you’re curious

  1. No Print PDFs
  2. Boom Cards
  3. Epic Books
  4. Kindle Books
  5. VOOKS.com
  6. YouTube videos of songs
  7. PDF worksheets

What the heck am I supposed to say?

Literally the exact things you would say in therapy! You can do a literacy based session, a describing session, a following directions activity, a cooking lesson, a core word lesson, the sky is the limit! I kind of view it as the perfect lesson without any little ones interrupting, lol

OK, but how do I know if anyone is watching?

First off, you might not. Thats one of the crappy things about distance learning isn’t it? But if you upload to YouTube you can get a view count. Does that help? Also, I give my kids an “assignment” in the video to send me a video back of something like retelling a story or describing something. Tbh, I haven’t gotten many back but all we can do is try!

But I want to see what this looks like..

OK, ok. In the name of education I will share one of my sessions that I send to kids with a few notes.

  1. DO NOT send this to your students. I am not their therapist, you are, and that would violate all sorts of laws. This is for educational purposes only.
  2. This is for my kids and only my kids goals, yours will absolutely look different depending on your students so don’t try to replicate this exactly. Use the words and phrases YOU USE in therapy, try to follow the routines you do. You kids will benefit from it A TON

Ok ok, without further ado, try not to laugh at my therapy voice.

Those resources you used are super awesome! How do I get them?

You’re in luck! That resource is FREE in my freebie library! Just subscribe to my email list at the top and sides of this website and you’ll get the password! If you’re looking for more I have TONS (and I mean tons) of no print materials in my TPT store like no print preschool language units, no print book buddies, boom cards to target all sorts of skills, and SO MUCH MORE!

I know that’s a lot. If you have questions, please shoot me an email, or send me a DM on Instagram. I’m here to help!
