Flexible seating in speech… when you have no space

So you’ve heard all about flexible seating and how great it is for students of all ages and ability levels. You have kiddos that would benefit from flexible seating in speech to increase their sensory readiness for learning. You’ve seen all of those awesome pictures of classrooms with lap desks, futons, wobble seats, exercise balls, and everything else. AMAZING!

Problem… your speech room used to be a broom closet. Or you don’t actually even have a special ed resource room. Or you don’t have the money to buy all those flexible seating options. You’re in luck, I have a couple solutions for you!

WOBBLE CUSHIONS as flexible seating

This is my favorite and the one I personally use in my speech room: WOBBLE CUSHIONS! My kids call them “squishys” You can get them for 10-20 dollars each on amazon. They come in a variety of colors and they really help wiggly bodies keep their little booties in a chair.

They are flexible because

  1. Your kiddos can choose to grab one or not – FLEXIBLE
  2. Students can choose if they want the smooth side or the pokey side
  3. Itty bitties can put it away or flip it over mid session with minimal disruptions

I love these because I can store 4 of them in a crate by my door. They are inexpensive. They don’t make any noise. And they are minimally distracting.

BOUNCY BANDS in Speech

These don’t currently fit on my teeny tiny chairs, but I have used them in the past and loved them. Basically, they are a band that goes between the front two legs of a chair. The students can put their feet on them for a little extra resistance when they bounce them up and down.

In my experience you have 2 options with these

  1. You can grab actual “bouncy band” brand bands which are virtually indestructable. The only con is that they don’t fit on smaller sized chairs.
  2. You can also but exercise resistance bands, however, they can sometimes roll up the legs of the chair because they don’t have the anchoring mechanisms of bouncy bands brand.

I love these because they take up a tiny amount of space (especially the exercise band option) and they an easily be slipped off for kids that it isn’t a good option. They are also great in a Reg Ed Classroom because they are virtually invisible.
