Colorful Teacher Capsule Wardrobe for Back to School – Cool Winter Edition

Hey there, lovely SLPs & teachers!

I’m excited to share a new approach to my wardrobe as we head back to school. As a mom navigating postpartum changes, I’ve found myself looking in my closet and feeling like I have nothing to wear. It’s been a challenge figuring out how to dress my new body and find pieces that make me feel good and confident. So, I’ve decided to simplify things by focusing on a few key pieces that I truly love and that work well for my current lifestyle. This is where my capsule wardrobe comes into play, and I’m excited to show you how it’s making my mornings so much easier.

You can shop my capsule here and here

Why a Capsule Wardrobe?

First things first, why should you consider a capsule wardrobe? Here are a few reasons:

  • Simplicity: Less clutter means less decision fatigue.
  • Versatility: Mix and match to create countless outfits.
  • Economical: Invest in key pieces that last longer.
  • Style: Always look put together with minimal effort.

Essential Pieces for Your Capsule Wardrobe

1. Basic Pants

A couple of pairs of basic pants are essential. Think black jeans, a black ponte pant, or a khaki style pant. These versatile pieces can be dressed up or down and are perfect for those long teaching days. I like to grab mine on thredup for a much more afforable option.

2. Classic White Shirt

You can’t go wrong with a crisp white shirt. It’s perfect for layering and can be dressed up or down. Plus, it’s nursing-friendly if you’re postpartum like me! My current favorite in these warmer months is this shirt from Quince. It is 100% cottton gauze fabric so it is super lightweight and breathable if you work in a not air conditioned building like me.

3. Natural Fiber Dresses

I’ve been loving natural fiber dresses, especially in cotton and linen. They’re breathable, comfortable, and perfect for those warm, stuffy classrooms without air conditioning. These are a few of my current faves – this linen button front option has amazing pleating in the back. It is super breathable because of the linen fabric, and this 100% cotton midi dress.

4. Shell Style Tank Tops

These are great for layering under a jean jacket or cardigan or on their own. They’re simple, stylish, and versatile and look more professional than a basic tank. I have a few in different ones I like. This one from quince and this one, this one, and this one from J Crew factory.

Since my school doesn’t have air conditioning, I feel comfortable wearing sleeveless tops as long as they are not spaghetti strap. They help keep me cool while still looking professional.

5. Linen Blend Pull-On Pants

Comfort is key, and linen blend pull-on pants are perfect. They’re breathable, comfortable, and easy to style. I have these, these, and these in my back to school capsule.

6. Gauze Cotton Fabric Pieces

Gauze cotton fabric is another favorite of mine. It’s lightweight, breathable, and perfect for layering or wearing on its own.

7. Comfortable Shoes

Working with kids means being on your feet a lot, so comfortable shoes are a non-negotiable. Here’s what I have in my capsule:

8. A lightweight cardigan

I like having 1-2 lightweight cardigans to throw on over a dress or a tank when it starts to get a little cooler in the mornings. I like this one from quince and this one from j crew factory.

10. Jean Jacket

A jean jacket is a versatile piece that can be dressed up or down. It adds a casual, stylish layer and is perfect for those cooler classroom moments. This is the one I current have in my capsule.

What I Have in My Capsule Wardrobe

To give you an idea of what a capsule wardrobe might look like, here’s what I currently have, in addition to a capsule I am also working with a “uniform” idea. Primarily either a tank and pants or a dress to simplify even further.

  • 7 Professional Tank Tops: These are perfect for layering and keeping cool.
  • 4-5 Pairs of Basic Pants: Including black jeans, a black ponte pant, or a khaki style pant.
  • 2-3 Easy Dresses: Great for those days when you need a quick, put-together look.
  • Lightweight Cardigan Sweaters: Ideal for layering and adding a bit of warmth when needed.
  • Jean Jacket: A versatile piece that can be dressed up or down.

My Personal Touches

I’ve got a few extra tips and personal touches to share. First off, I got my colors done by Created Colorful, and it’s been a game-changer! Knowing which colors suit me best has made shopping so much easier and more fun.

I’m also postpartum, so figuring out my size and style has been a bit of a journey. Comfort is key, especially since I work with a lot of preschoolers. I need outfits that allow me to move freely and handle whatever my little ones throw at me (sometimes literally!). Plus, nursing-friendly options are a must!

Tips for Building Your Capsule Wardrobe

  • Stick to a Color Palette: Choose colors that complement each other, making mixing and matching a breeze.
  • Prioritize Comfort: You’ll be in these clothes all day, so make sure they’re comfortable and practical.
  • Invest in Quality: It’s better to have a few high-quality pieces than a closet full of fast fashion that doesn’t last.
