PUT is one of my favorite core words for the winter season
You can
❄️put winter clothes on
❄️put ingredients in a soup pot (or any other winter food)
❄️put pieces on a snowman
And so much more!
Just a few reminders for you…
- Here is a blog post all about how and why I use a core words approach if you need a refresher
- You can download my free core board HERE and HERE and find it translated to a variety of languages HERE

A song – Put on your shoes
A book – All Better (Put on the Bandaids)
This book is perfect to practice the word “put” by putting. bandaids on the animals in the book. You can also extend this activity by putting real or pretend bandaids on people, baby dolls, and more. There is also another similar version called Good as New
Magnet Dolls (or regular dolls)
Practice following directions using put and expressively using the word put by putting shoes on, putting clothes on, putting hats on, and more with these fun magnet dolls! I like the variety and price in this boy version and this girl version, but Melissa and Doug also has some fun versions that might appeal to your itty bitty learners like Abby & Emma Dolls, this Occupations Version, this Disney Princess version or this one, or my toddler’s personal favorite this Paw Patrol version
Play Soup, or any other cooking activity
Who doesn’t love soup during the winter months? And all of the ingredients are perfect for repeated modeling of the core word PUT. Put the carrots in the pot, put the celery in the pot, put the noodles in the pot, put the pot on the stove, put the soup in the bowl, even put the bowl in the sink or dishwasher. I love this soup play set because it includes everything I need to “make soup” all in one place but you could also make salad, make stir fry, or even make a real recipe!
Build a Snowman
Make a snowman with real snow, fake snow, play dough, paper, or buy one of these handy felt snowmen and PUT the eyes on, put the hat on, put the buttons on, etc.
Mr. Potato Head
What can’t you use Mr. Potato Head for? It is one of my very favorite all purpose toys and one I always recommend to build a toy “capsule” of sorts. You can use it for the core word put but putting the eyes on, putting the nose on, putting the hat on, etc. So many possibilities!
