I, along with many other people in the education field, have definitely come to the realization that the diversity in our picture books is abysmal. I thought it was ok because most of my books didn’t even have people in them they were all animals, that’s ok right?? Wrong… I needed to do better with using books with my students with. characters that LOOK like them and have the same EXPERIENCES as them. Enter, this giant haul of Diverse Books for Speech Therapy.
As teachers and educational professionals we don’t get paid a lot, so, totally overhauling our books is generally out of the budget right? Wrong. I got an GIANT diverse books haul from Scholastic Book Clubs for under 50 dollars. And I mean… a lot of books. Let me show you what I got!

- You Hold Me Up – A great reminder from the tradition of Native peoples that we need to hold each other up.
- All Are Welcome – A great reminder that all are welcome at school and in the classroom.
- The King of Kindergarten – A boy is nervous about his first day of kindergarten, until he realizes that he is the king. Perfect for back to school!
- Fresh Princess – A girl moves across the country and has to. find her confidence and new friends.
- Happy in Our Skin –
- Every Little Thing – Based on a classic Bob Marley Song. So cute!
- Not Quite Snow White – A girl is told she can’t be Snow White because of her size and the color of her skin. She learns that that isn’t true and gains confidence!
- Ruby Finds a Worry – Ruby is worried and it starts to effect her whole life. She learns that the best way to find a worry is to talk about it.
- I Am Enough – The title says it all with this one.
- Binny’s Diwali – One of my goals this year is to explore more diverse holidays with my students. This book is a PERFECT introduction to the Hindu holiday Diwali.
- Last Stop on Market Street – This classic is all about the experience of riding the bus and seeing diverse people along the way. The illustrations are AMAZING.
- I Got the School Spirit – My mom got my I Got the Rhythm a few years ago and my kiddos LOVED it. I’m excited to add this school themed edition to my collection
- We March. – This super simple story is a walk through the March on Washington and would be perfect to introduce MLK Day to your littles.
- Be You! – Encouraging kiddos to be themselves? I’m all about it!
- There’s Only One You – Another book that encourages students to embrace their uniqueness and that of others. I’m in!
