On is a great core word to add to your to target list. It is multifunctional – i.e., put on or turn on – and it pairs well with a lot of toys and themes! I always choose to target it in December during the holidays because we can…
- put ornaments and lights ON trees and stars ON top
- turn on Christmas lights
- put frosting and sprinkles on cookies
- put wrapping and bows on presents
…. but you can target it year round too!

Here are 8 ideas to target the. core word on in speech therapy!
1. A song – the wheels on the bus
I always like to start my core word sessions with a song, and the Wheels on the Bus is a great one! I also like Up on the Rooftop as a holiday option
2. A book – Hop on Pop
Although the story isn’t the best, they use the word “on” in this book A LOT and the goal with these books is modeling, modeling, modeling
3. Stacker Rings
Put the rings on the stacker, request by color i.e. “put red on”
4. Cookie Toys
Put the cookies on the tray, put the frosting on the cookies, put the cookies on a plate! Grab the Christmas version to make this Christmas themed!
5. Christmas Tree
Grab any toy, wood, felt, or real Christmas Tree and put the ornaments on and a star on top!
6. Toy Blocks
Put the blocks on top of each other, on your head, on the table, etc.
